Burnhamthorpe Water Project

Mississauga City Centre is a densely populated area with a large shopping mall, a college, performing arts centers, high-rise condominiums, a transit centre, city hall, and heavy vehicle traffic. The Burnhamthorpe Water Project requires that over 12 kilometres of water and wastewater infrastructure be built to support the development of the Mississauga City Centre, all of which must be completed before construction of the new Hurontario light rail transit (LRT) line.  Using tunneling and trenchless methods for larger-diameter installations to minimize surface impacts within Mississauga City Centre, reducing impacts to traffic, residents, and businesses. Critical watermains and sanitary sewers were constructed to ensure the rapid growth of Mississauga City Centre infrastructure to accommodate 25,000 new residents and 20,000 more jobs by 2031. 1,500 metres of 1,200-mm sanitary sewer were constructed with microtunneling to reduce impacts along narrow streets servicing City Hall, Square One Shopping Centre, and Sheridan College. 3,700 metres of 1,500-mm watermain were constructed through tunneling, significantly reducing traffic interruptions on Burnhamthorpe Road, a major arterial route servicing Mississauga City Centre.
